About Hampshire

Situated in the South East of England on the English Channel Coast, Hampshire, one of the most affluent counties in the country. From its narrow, medieval streets and ample old-world treasures to its sweeping forests and grand country manors, Hampshire’s regal, political and cultural history has never been so easy to absorb. Hampshire encompasses not one, but two of the UK’s 15 national parks. The New Forest and South Downs are brimming with ancient woodlands and scenic coastal trails.

Hampshire is famous for a vast number of reasons, one being its variety of stately homes and impressive mansions. Some of the best-loved TV mansions and stately grounds are based here, such as Highclere Castle, well-known for being a filming location of Downtown Abbey.

  • The 118-year-old Handyside Bridge featured in the Harry Potter films as the boarding point for the Hogwarts Express.
  • Southampton, the original departure points for the Mayflower and the Titanic, and Portsmouth, home to many restored ships, are prime examples of England’s nautical roots.
  • Southampton has had its fair share of aviation history. The Spitfire, a huge advancement in the books of aero-travel, first took off from Southampton in 1936.
  • You have probably heard of the famous English author Jane Austen. If you are a literature fanatic, you can visit Austen’s family house where Jane Austen lived after her father’s death.
  • Home to Portsmouth’s Naval Base has been an integral part of the city since 1194. It is home to almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy’s surface ships, including the new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, the formidable Type 45 destroyers, Type 23 frigates and mine countermeasures and fishery protection squadrons.
