A port city in Devon Plymouth is known for its maritime heritage and historic Barbican district with narrow, cobbled streets. Sutton Harbour is home to the National Marine Aquarium, where sharks and rays glide in a deep tank. Also in the harbour are several marinas and a fish market, the Plymouth Fisheries.

  • Plymouth was heavily blitzed during World War 2 with 59 air raids that claimed 1000 lives and destroyed 3,700 houses. Most of the city centre had to be totally rebuilt, resulting in the rather bland concrete structures seen today.
  • The fishing industry in Plymouth brings in, gross, £12m per annum.
  • The Plymouth Gin Distillery is Oldest in England. Formally home to a monastery, the Plymouth Gin Distillery opened in 1793. Also known as the Black Friars distillery, it is the oldest working gin distillery in England.
  • The Plymouth Pear tree is one of the UK’s rarest, and gets its name from the area it was originally found growing in 1870.
  • Plymouth-born Trevor Francis was the first player to command a £1 million transfer fee in English football.The 64-year-old is a former footballer who played as a forward for Birmingham city in the 70s.
