Torquay is a seaside town in Devon, England, part of the unitary authority area of Torbay. It lies 18 miles south of the county town of Exeter and 28 miles east-north-east of Plymouth. Torquay’s name originates in its being the quay of the ancient village of Torre. The area comprising modern Torquay has been inhabited since Palaeolithic times. Hand axes found in Kents Cavern have been dated as 40,000 years old and a maxilla fragment, known as Kents Cavern 4, may be the oldest of a modern human in Europe, dating back to 37,000 – 40,000 years ago.
