house history

Birch Vale House

Encircled by 22 acres of land, The Bennetts resided and began Birch Vale Prints works in the 1800’s. Later passed down to Mr Bennett, a cotton manufacturer, who set up his business through borrowed money with an aim of stopping everyone in Birch Vale suffering from malnutrition. He set up a soup kitchen which was built to the workforce and in return the workers built the grand Birch Vale House.

Completed with enormous sash windows, extravagant drawing rooms, gold leaf cornices and under floor heating the house boasted elaborate features while hosting separate rooms and facilities for the on-site maids. The grounds were also home to a large, heated greenhouse in which Mr Bennett grew grapes and bananas. However, owning such a vast stretch of land came with its maintenance and the hand-made lawnmowers would take a remarkable 11hours a time, just to keep on top of the impressive lawns.

Birch Vale House was later pulled down but the stone was re-used to build bungalows on a hill opposite Sycamore pub. Following the deconstruction, the land was later used as a knacker’s yard and furthermore, an abattoir.
